Chief of Security

Implement, evaluate, and maintain policies, procedures and practices to provide the highest level of safety and security for patients, staff and visitors. Training, developing, and motivating supervisory staff to effectively oversee all day-to-day operations of the site security personnel. Participate in system level projects and be a liaison to Security Leadership. The position is also responsible for implementing and directing the facility Environment of Care Program including appointment as Campus Chair for Local EOC and Workplace Violence Committee. Responsible for ensuring all armed personnel under their command meet training and competency standards. Security leaders are responsible for making immediate decisions in dynamic and potentially violent situations.
Position Responsibilities:
Evaluates practices and identifies methods to improve the Safety and security management program, including participation in the Environment of Care Committee and the periodic measurement of program effectiveness.
Supports the enforcement of hospital-wide weapons and security policies
Generate monthly performance reports specific to Safety and Security.
Assess all campus security and safety incidents to ensure proper actions are taken as needed, develop and implement practices to mitigate future occurrences.
Develop strategic plans based on results and outcomes.
Develops budget for the division and allocates funds within budget limit to accomplish objectives.
Monitors variance again budget on an ongoing basis.
In the capacity of Safety Officer, implements and directs the Environment of Care program in the facility.
Conduct monthly meetings with departmental safety representatives and provide guidance to EOC group regarding appropriate responses to emergency situations such as life safety, fire prevention, hazardous materials management plan, infant abduction plan etc.
Collaborate and effectively communicate (verbal and written) with division team members; officer-in-charge (OIC); immediate Supervisor; Nursing Supervisor; Director; Division Management; Health System security teams; and law enforcement agencies.
Supports the Security Incident Commander during violent threats, active shooter events, or other high-risk incidents.
Supports and coordinates with local law enforcement and emergency services for joint response planning, drills, and mutual aid agreements.
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the security technology and systems used throughout the Health System to provide visitor control; investigations, incident reports; access control and weapons screening; infant protection and the security of sensitive areas.
Ensure proper operation of security equipment and systems.
Provide training to hospital and campus staff on security-related issues.
Develop policies, procedures, and training programs specific to end user areas and systems, including fire drills, infant protection drills, sensitive area training, etc.
Assists with ensuring division is compliant with all regulatory agencies pertaining to Security operations.
Participate in annual risk assessments, security audits, Security Managers Council and work with Corporate Safety Officer and other divisions to develop best practices. Conduct annual Security assessment as required by Joint Commission for Workplace Violence, collaborate with patient facing staff per regulatory requirements.
Ensures compliance with Joint Commission standards, OSHA regulations, and CMS emergency preparedness requirements.
Responsible for ensuring all armed personnel under their command meet training and competency standards.
Conduct and/or supervise confidential investigations as required and make recommendations on preventive or remedial actions.
Responsible for parking management.
Position Qualifications Required / Experience Required:
A minimum of 5 years of security required. Management experience preferred.
Safety and security knowledge. Knowledge of life safety code, OSHA and NFPA.
Excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, organizational skills, judgment, and decision making.
Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Training / Certification / Licensure:
Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued license to carry a firearm and complete all required annual requalification and psychological evaluations. Firearms must be hospital-issued or approved, and stored, transported, and maintained in accordance with hospital weapons policy and local/state laws.
Must complete and maintain certifications in:
- Firearms safety and tactical readiness
- Crisis intervention and de-escalation
- Behavioral health response
- Active shooter and mass casualty response
Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) preferred.
Valid driver’s license required. Must be at least 21 years of age and meet insurance requirements.
Annual Salary: $79,719 - $123,934 The actual salary/rate will vary based on applicant’s experience as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
